The Yayi Progressives Movement (YPM) is a grassroots political organisation committed to progressive leadership, inclusive political participation, grassroots development, and the advancement of the political interests of the people of Ogun State. Led by Convener Armstrong ‘Tope Akintunde, alongside Co-Conveners Hon. (Mrs.) Abidemi Bada and Hon. Kehinde Odeneye, and coordinated by Hon. Olusegun Kaka, the movement brings together apex leaders, state executive members, local government coordinators, ward leaders, artisans, students, youth groups, and other members from across Ogun State. The organisation has continued to build an organised grassroots structure across the state’s 20 local government areas. The movement describes its evolution as a journey of consultation, political engagement, and grassroots mobilisation. Before the 2023 general elections, the platform operated as the Dapo Abiodun Continuity Agenda (DACA), established to support the re-election of Governor Dapo Abiodun. Following consultations and changes in the political environment, the platform evolved into the Omoluabi Movement, with an emphasis on progressive values, inclusiveness, and people-oriented leadership. Further engagements and collaboration with political groups across Ogun State subsequently led to the emergence of the Yayi Progressives Movement. According to leadership of the organisation, the transition represented more than a change of name. It was intended to create a broader and more inclusive grassroots platform capable of bringing together people from different communities, professions, backgrounds, and generations around a shared political vision. The movement currently has more than 80,000 members across Ogun State, following the emergence and inauguration of additional student members in the state. According to the organisation, its membership comprises youths, women, artisans, professionals, community leaders, political stakeholders, and other residents involved in the political process. For public-interest reporting, the membership figure should be independently verified before publication or clearly attributed to the movement as its own claim. The recent inauguration of the movement at the Ake Palace Ground in Abeokuta demonstrated its growing grassroots presence and organisational capacity. The event provided an opportunity for members and supporters from different parts of the state to express their support for Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as well as other candidates who share the movement’s stated political ideals. Beyond electoral politics, the movement seeks to promote greater citizen participation in public affairs and strengthen the relationship between communities and the political process. Its stated philosophy is that politics should extend beyond elections to include leadership development, civic participation, community engagement, and opportunities for citizens particularly young people; to become active participants in governance and public affairs. Youth empowerment is one of the movement’s stated priorities. The organisation seeks to encourage young people to move beyond political spectatorship and become active stakeholders in governance and community development. The movement attributes its organisational growth to its grassroots structure and the efforts of its leadership, particularly Convener Armstrong ‘Tope Akintunde, whom it credits with strengthening mobilisation, strategic engagement, and coordination across communities. The organisation recognises the contributions of its executives, coordinators, ward leaders, and members, whose activities have helped expand its presence across Ogun State. With the 2027 political cycle approaching, the Yayi Progressives Movement is focused on strengthening its existing structures and expanding its grassroots reach. The organisation has set a target of growing its membership to more than 100,000 people across Ogun State, with the stated objective of building one of the state’s strongest and most coordinated grassroots political networks. The movement intends to contribute to the electoral success of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and candidates who align with its stated progressive ideals across presidential, federal, and state legislative contests. However, its objective is not simply to increase membership numbers. Rather, it aims to build a political organisation anchored on loyalty, participation, political education, community engagement, organisation, and a shared commitment to the development of Ogun State. MESSAGE TO OGUN STATE RESIDENTS The Yayi Progressives Movement is inviting youths, women, community leaders, professionals, artisans, political stakeholders, and other residents of Ogun State who identify with its progressive political philosophy to join the organisation. The movement seeks to position itself not merely as a political support group, but as a growing grassroots organisation and platform for political participation. As Ogun State looks towards 2027 and beyond, the movement says it remains committed to grassroots mobilisation, political participation, civic engagement, and the promotion of what it describes as progressive ideals.
